Speaker biographies

Irja Alakivi

Irja Alakivi studied chemistry at the Tartu University. After having attended courses and trainings on public administration of environmental protection in several countries, she worked at the Nature Protection Board of Tartu County and then at the department of City Planning of Tartu city government. She is presently working in the Association of Estonian Cities. She published more than 30 articles on sustainable development planning and Local Agenda 21 issues.

Audrone Alijosiute

Audrone Alijosiute is currently the Director of Environmental Center for Administration and Technology in Lithuania. Previously, she was Lecturer on environmental policy and managed projects (1999- 2005). From 1996 to 2000, she was senior ECAT expert on Sustainable Development and Local Agenda 21. After having made her master of Public Administration, she worked from 1991 to 1995 as environmental expert at the City Administration of Kaunas.
She has led projects on Local Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development financed by EU and other funding organisations such as UNDP, Union of Baltic Cities, and Finnish Ministry of Environment. She has been involved in the initiative group on Baltic Local Agenda 21 Forum and leads the informal network of Lithuanian cities working towards Sustainability.

Arno Behrens

Arno Behrens was born in 1977. Holding a master in economics, he is currently working on his PhD thesis which aims to explore the linkages between environmental and development policies from a material flows perspective. Since 2003 he is researcher at SERI. Areas of research include environmental economics and management, globalisation and international development as well as policy design and analysis for sustainable development.

Egidijus Cibirauskas

Egidijus Cibirauskas has been working at the organisation “Lithuanian Green Movement” since 2004. He is responsible for Sustainable Development and the Coordination of the Eco-School program in Lithuania.

Günter Chodzinski

Günter Chodzinski, Dipl. Sociology. From 1983-1989 he cooperated in research programmes at the University of Bielefeld. Between 1989 and 2003 he was active in leading positions at various organisations, a.o. at the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin. Currently he is working in Berlin as project consultant for funding programmes of the European Union. Apart from this, he is the speaker of the Local Agenda 21 in Falkensee.

Gerold Fierment

Gerold Fierment, born in 1940, studied Biology and Chemistry. First, he was teacher in Marbach. From 1965- 1991 he worked as research associate in Potsdam, Berlin and Müncheberg. Then, he was active in leading positions in the area of environmental management a.o. the centre for environmental research Neuruppin. From 1998 up to the present, he cooperates in the Brandenburg Workshop Local Agenda 21 and since 2002 he is speaker of this initiative.

Edgar Göll

Edgar Göll, born 1957, tool-and-die-maker, studied Sociology, Administrative Sciences and Social Sciences at Universities in Bielefeld, Madison/U.S., Speyer and John-F.-Kennedy-Institute of the Free University of Berlin. Afterwards he did a doctorate at the University of Goettingen. Since 1995 he has been working as researcher at the IZT in the departments “Future Research“ and “Sustainable Development“.

Birger Hartnuß

Birger Hartnuß was born in 1968. For several years he worked in research projects on the cooperation of youth welfare service and school at the universities of Halle and Greifswald. From 1998 to 2002 he worked at the office of the Enquete Commission “Future of citizen’s participation”. Since 2002 he has been scientific assistant at the office of the Federal Network for citizen’s participation. He works primarily in the area of cooperation between youth welfare service and school, volunteerism, citizen’s participation and education.

Eckhard Heuer

Eckhard Heuer, born in 1959, studied forestry science at the University of Freiburg. From 1991 and 1993 he lead a research project. Then, he worked as department director in the forestry administration of Borgsdorf. Since 2000 he has been working as head of department in the ministry of environment of Brandenburg and since January 2005 he has been responsible for the subject sustainable development.

Astrid Paschkowski

Astrid Paschkowski was born in Potsdam in 1963. After having studied educational science, she worked as a teacher for several years. Since 1994 she is responsible for environmental communication, conservation and regional development at the World Wide Fund Germany. From 2000 to 2003, she studied environmental science by correspondence course.

Judith Polterauer

Judith Polterauer, born in 1976, studied sociology, business economics and communication science. Holding a master in sociology, she is presently working on her PhD thesis at the University of Bamberg. The title is “The development of social structures through Corporate Citizenship at the small business sector in Germany”.
